We have been given two display cases for two months.

I went to wal mart this morning. They have red green and white sweat shirts in the Christmas sections of the womens department for$5.00. I picked up a red one and will probably go back for a green one to put the "Chicks" logo on. If you would like to have a shirt , sweat shirt, canvas bag or whatever screened with the log just get it in this month along with $5. I will turn our things in the first week of February.

This year the library is asking community groups and patrons to help decorate for Christmas. We are to decorate a 1000 square foot area with about 70% recycled materials, most of it created by the community and patrons. I was hoping your group would like to help by making garlands. We are doing paper bag ornaments, punched tin stars, spice topiaries, dried fruit ornaments, and gingerbread men to create a homespun Christmas display in the Reading Room. I was thinking a handmade garland from recycled or leftover fibers/yarns would be a nice touch. Let me know if you might be interested in this project, or perhaps another idea for decorating.

Shirts...update

As it turns out the fella that is going to do the screen printing is going in for hernia surgery the frist part of November. See if you can get your t shirts and$5 in by the 2nd Thursday in October. After that we will have to work on a 2nd batch after the 1st of the year.

My best friend is an artist and has agreeed to design a t-shirt for us. I can get them screen printed at work reasonably. It will be a woman sitting lotus position holding knittng needles with the ball of yarn rolling away.

The offender that will screen print them has yellow and white ink. If we want a different collor we will have to purchase the ink. We will have to purchase t-shirts and bring them.

I am thinking a dark purple, for me. I want to wear it to yoga on Saturdays. If you would like, bring the t-shirt and $5.00 to the 2nd Wednesday, 2nd Thursday, or one of the Saturday Knitting and Yoga get togethers by the end of October.

That should be plenty of time to get everyone together.

I want to have them done all at once. If you would prefer an different color you can purchase the screen print dye at Hobby Lobby and bring it with your shirt. You won't get the die back. Multiples are allowed. We just need to do it as a group order. I won't be able to do one or two at a time. The design will be in one color. You can also have a the front of a canvas bag screen printed if you like. Same price.

Melinda, Sharon and I had a blast at Stich n Suff! The store is packed from top to bottowm with lovely yarn and Mrs. Francis could answer any question we asked her and more I an sure.

I bet after looking at our pictures you wished you had come....well you may get a chance.
Mrs. Francis said that every January and every July she and Mrs. Sue put the whole store on sale. I say we load up the first Saturday of January and head back out. The prices were reasonable today. And will be even better then.

Field Trip details to work out

Ok,

So I have been thinking, since some of us are doing yoga on Saturday mornings we can bring clothes to changes into there. The temple has great rest room facilities.

We are going to have to decide where to meet to car pool and leave our cars. Since we are headed into Texas and yoga is out on Jefferson Paige what do you think about the Wal mart parking lot off pines road? Or a little further down there is a Cracker Barr ell. we could meet there about 1145.

We are still planning on the 13th. Melinda and Sharron have expressed interest in ridding with me that leaves one more seat If you want to ride with me let me know soon. If you are going to drive and have room for more folks please let me know.

This is going to be such good fun....oh by the by....did you know this is also Melinda's birthday....yep it is...

And don't forget or regular get togethers this week. Second Wednesday is the 10th at 5:30 second Thursday is the 11th at 5:00

Todd and I drove to Longview today and checked out Stich 'N Stuff. Mrs. Sue was a delight. The store is chuk full of all manner of yarn and accessories. While in Longview we stopped at Jucy's for a burger. It was great. Todd suggested some of us girls make the tirp. I thought that was a wonderful idea and so did Mrs. Sue.

I need some time to get some play money together, and Mrs. Sue said that Saturday was best for her, so I was thinking about August 13th. Have a light breakfast and we can
leave about 1030, stop by Jucy's for lunch and then on to Stich 'N Stuff. My car will comfortably seat 3 more folks and we can caravan if anyone else wants to drive.

Be sure and email me and let me know if you will be riding with me. We can decide on where to meet later. I will be taking 1-20 streight in to the exit for HWY 259N.
Jucy's is on the left about 5 miles on and Stich 'N Stuff is about 10 miles north of there on the left as well.

When at one Books a Million at one of Kats meetings in April of 2009 I picked up a knitting mag that had the coolest shirt on the front cover. It was above my skill level then but recently I decided to give it a try. The yarn suggested was out of my price range so I substuted. You know where this is going right?

It turned out 3 sizes too big. Swatch now smile later.

When Ravelry started up Kat was so excited about it that I signed up. Unfortumatly thats all I did.

Recently I have actually explored the site. It is awsome! There are forums to chat with other knitters or corcheters from all over the world. It that were not cool enough there is a place to log your stash, another for your needles or hooks.

The projects area is cool. You can list what your are working on, making notes, listing the yarn and needles you used and any other notes. You can note how you adjusted the pattern or made changes for a partiular person.

Several of you are already on the site but if you have not looked into it I would
recomend it.

There is so much more to it that I have not explored. It has taken a bit of time.
I get so excited that I sometimes spend more time on the site than knitting.I have to limit myself.

Carol suggested we include our books in the swap. She cleaned out her stash before I did, but has books that she no longer needs. Its a great idea! If you have books that deal with fiber art bring them. Knitting, crochet, tatting, spinning, weaving, anything to do with yarn that you have gotten all the good out of already bring them.

After the sheering we went to the Walter B Jacobs Nature Park. It was wonderful too.

It was suggested that we have more field trips. So if you hear of things that you would like us to do as a group let me know.

We will post it and see what kind of response we get. I like the idea.

Its spring and with spring comes festavels. I have been know to go and listen to the music, knit and have yummy snacks. Just something to think about.

Hi Peggy

I have been looking for a video online to show you how I do it. Most of the videos are showing a wrap and turn in stockinette stitch and this washcloth is garter stitch.

This one is short but it shows the way I do it with the exception that she knits continental and I throw my stitches.
Basically, when I get to the wrap and turn, I put the next stitch (the one I am going to wrap) on the right needle as if to purl. Then I put the yarn to the front and put that same stitch back onto the left needle. Then I turn my work and knit back the other way to the end of the row. It makes a short row beginning where I wrapped and makes the knitting expand upwards. You can go back and forth like that and build rows in the middle of your stitching. This video you might have to replay a couple of times because she pulls that stitch over right at the beginning.

When you make one of these washcloths you basically start in the middle and make a leaf off to the side. Then you pick up stitches in the middle and knit in the other direction. If you wrap and turn this way there shouldn't be a hole in the middle of your work.

Here are 2 pictures showing how I made mine. One picture shows half of a washcloth. I have more pics on ravelry. I am crossloch there.

That wrap and turn technique is called short rows. There are a lot of videos on youtube for short rows and a couple of other help groups have them, too. Some people do them slightly different. Basically, slip the stitch to the right, pull the yarn to the front, slip the stitch back to the left, then turn your work and knit back the other way. If you are still confused I could probably meet you somewhere to show you.

March Chicks With Sticks--a note from Kat

I will be giving lessons on how to change colors in Tunisian Crochet at the next meeting on Wednesday, March 9th and Thursday, March 10th.
For learning basic color changes, you will need one skein of a light color and one skein of a nice contrasting color.

List of supplies needed for the class:
1 skein Worsted Weight light colored yarn - NO VARIEGATED
1 skein Worsted Weight dark colored yarn - NO VARIEGATED
1 Size J Afghan hook
1 small stitch holder (it will be holding ONE stitch at all times. You'll understand once you see why in class.)
You will need to know how to make butterfly "bobbins" or bring a few bobbins to class with you. Bobbins in reference to knitting are anything that can hold your yarn between color changes. Or, if you are old school, just leave your tails hanging and untangle them as they are needed.

After the class, I will be handing out LSU Tigers and NO Saints patterns for anyone who is interested in creating Tunisian lapghans for the nursing home residents. You don't have to use the patterns. It is easy to create your own.

Bayou Shadow Farms will be shearing it's Alpacca's and Llama's on March 24th, starting at 8:00 a.m. You should bring your own chair and handwork if you like. Fiber will be $25 per pound. she will except both cash and checks. There will be no selling of "fleece blankets" aka all fiber from one animal.

The 'Switch' actress was gifted a basket of wool and some special needles recently and is now making the most of her new hobby to create new items for her wardrobe.

"I've knitted a couple of hats and a couple of scarves and I'm starting on my first poncho."

As well as knitting, Jennifer, 41, also enjoys cooking and admits she feels insulted if people don't finish her culinary creations.

She added: "I'm half Greek, so I'm partial to Greek food.

"I remember the first time I was going to make my first Spanakopita - spinach pie - for Thanksgiving. My dad gave me my grandmother's recipe and eight hours later I was still baking! It was exhausting and then nobody ate it!

RE: Forcht Wade Correctional Center
Annual Toy Drive
December 10, 2010 At 9:00 A.M.

This year the Offender population once again rose to the challenge to provide toys for families in need.
The offenders assigned to the FWCC Toy Project made approximately 2,146 wooded toys. The toys were hand crafted by offenders at Forcht Wade Correctional Center.

This year they made: puzzles, abc blocks, cars, dolls with beds and blankets, and ducks. The blankets for the beds were knitted by “Chicks with Sticks” a local group that meets monthly at the Hamilton South Caddo Branch Library. The dolls were donated by The Women’s Club in Homer.

The toys will be picked up at Forcht Wade Correctional Center, on December 10, 2010 at 9:00 A.M, by local organizations from Natchitoches to Haynesville.

Who knew!?!

I delivered the rest of the baby doll blankets to Major Specks this week and appologized that we had not met the 275 blanket goal. He laughed and said that I
must have heard him wrong. Two-hundred fifty was the number of baby doll beds made.

As a mater of fact since the change of focus from intake center to drug and alcohol rehab center the prison's craft shop is not oppen for access as much and 250 baby doll beds will be the limit that can be produced given that other toys will also have to be made.

With our commitment to the nursing home and the baby doll blanket count needed going down it appears we will have time a plenty for both projects.

At our November Meeting....

At our November meeting we talked about projects for the upcoming year. As of now we are continuing with the Baby Doll Blanket Project and starting a new project.

It was suggested that honoring our seniors in nursing homes would be a good idea.
Along those lines Melinda has visited a home in Vivian, La. (Just down the road)
and our project met with great interst. (inserting Melinda's emil)

Hey!!!

Just spoke to Tina Graham at the nursing home in Vivian. She was very very delighted.

They currently have 65 residents. She assured me that any and all we could do would be most appreciated. Most are euphemistically termed under privileged….
Many don’t have visitors for months on end….

I gave her all the contact information. I will be meeting with her on my lunch break within the next week. She agreed that 36 x by is perfect.

November Meetings

I have so many thing to tell you that I will just make a list:

1. Our 2nd Thursday meeting in November has been moved to the 1st Thursday because the library wil be closed on the 2nd Thursday.
2. Pam Jones will be demonstrating Tunisian Crochet at our 2nd Wednesday meeting in November.
3. Sarah Lee will need our Christmas Decorations labled when we bring them in and they are due in Nobember as well.
4. The 12'x12' baby doll blankets that we donate to Forcht Wade each year are due.
Pleae bring them in to the Nobember meetings.

If I have done in correctly there are several links at the bottom of this post that will allow you to look at tutorials on Tunisian Crochet. There is also one link to:
eKnitting.com . They currently have a "free shipping" deal going for chrchet hooks.
So if you don't have a Tunisian hook and want to get one before the November meeting this will be an option for you.

Monday Night at the Mission ----post poned

The board of directors at the mission feel that at this time their clients do not have time for another class. This was a decision that was made after our plans were set and I deeply apologize for building us up just to say, sorry.

It was uplifting to see that as a group we could pull together the time and supplies that would have been needed for their group in such a short time.

Keep knitting....we have decorations for the library, and the baby doll blanket dead lines coming soon.

Monday Nights at the Mission!

Your response never ceses to amaze me! I asked if you wanted to knit for the children and you make baby doll blankets for underprivilaged, unfortunate, and ill children in our area. I ask if you would give of yourselves to teach ,those who have fallen on though times, the skills you have and again you came through.

First let me thank the following ladies who stepped up without any details
and said "yes, you can count on me":

Dr. Cathy Vanderloose, Melinda Million, & Dolly Stamper

Our contact at the mission is Claudia Martin. She thinks that Monday evenings at 7pm will be a good time for our meetings. I suggested that we start after the holiday so Monday, September the 13th will be our first night.

I will take that class and would encourage any of you who would like to rotate with us to come out that night to get aquanted with the surroundings and meet Mrs. Martin.

Mrs. Martin will be passing around a sign up list and we will call before the 13th to get an idea of how many ladies to prepare for.

Melinda has already secured a large amount of yarn from an e bay bid and I have several sets of needles, so here we go!

The plan is to rotate, each person taking a Monday in turn. This being the case Dr. Vanderloose is going to need a partner. Like she says "ya never know when those babys are going to show up".

Also, I would like to take this opportunity to invite anyone who was waiting for more of the details to make a decision and let Melinda or I know if you will be able to facilitae a Monday Night at the Mission.

Ladies,

I would like you to consider something. This week I was offered and opportunity we as a group might consider. Giving our time and talents to the less fortunate. The Rescue Mission not only helps down on their luck gentlemen but women and children as well.

The thought definitely interests me. Supplies should not be an issue. I have had experience with procuring donations for worthy causes and would not hesitate to contact the yarn companies for donations for and on going project. In the mean time I have some needles that are little more than decorations. Goodness knows in that "stash" of mine I can come up with enough yarn to work with for a while.

Knitting with you has taught me that its about the connections with others as much as the yarn or the neat things we can make with it. The social opportunities that this would offer to ladies who are no longer in their comfort zone(to put it mildly)is invaluable. I am not asking for your money or your stash. If your heart is open to the idea of donating 1 to 1 1/2 hours on a rotating basis (with me) to facilitate a weekly knitting class for the ladies of the rescue mission let me know.

My thoughts were that with three others we would each take one weekly meeting. If more than three others wants to help that would just make the rotation wider. As you know,

knitting is about watching, doing, and practicing. With a week between classes it will give the ladies time to practice what they have learned and not so much time that they would wait until one of us showed back up to help them through to the next step.

After four years of the 2nd Thursday I need a change

Ladies,

Due to some family obligations I will be otherwise entertained on Thursday evenings for the foreseeable future.

It is not my intention to abandon Chicks With Sticks. It has been such a pleasure to meet and visit with ,as well as learn from you all.

Starting in June Chicks With Sticks will meet at the same place, Hamilton South Caddo Library,at the same time ,5:30pm, but on a different night of the week, Wednesday. The 2nd Wednesday of each month.

I will pop in on the 2nd Thursday of May to make sure all is going well but will not be able to stay the whole time.

If anyone would like to commit to the 2nd Thursday I would be happy to continue to publisize,seend emails,reserve the room and blog your event. Please let me know.

Major Specks at Forcht Wade Correctional Center shared the, thank you, letters with we this week. Your sprit is sure to be lifted by seeing them.

I know that 5th letter is hard to read but is speaks of putting her pet to sleep in the doll bed and placing the blanket on its tummy. (AWWWWWWWWW...)

You should all be very prould of yourselves.

Days off in a row.....watch out world!

Guys I thought the fates had been conspiring against me. How could we possibly have the library close for inclimint weather! This is the Deep South for pitty sake.

Then the snow came and it was lovely. There are just no words. My yard has never been so pretty :) With the snow came an extra day off from work. I had already scheduled an extra day off with my state holiday of today, I scheduled off Monday.
To my glee I got a snow day Friday and parlaid my sate holida into a 5 day vacation!

I have been knitting and have a sweater to show you. I just went out and got buttons for it a few minutes ago. You must have had a little extra time to knit yourselves. I can not wait to see what you have been up to.

Speaking of buttons, while I was at Hobby Loby I met several ladies you where interested in coming on the 2nd Thursday. Haveing you ladies to knit with has been a blessing to me and Its nice when I can share it with others.

I miss you all and hope to see you soon!

LOL!!! :D Yes, we will be learning entrelac! The pattern that Peggy found online is one of the patterns available to learn. Don't be intimidated. It really is much easier than it appears!!! The best thing to bring with you in addition to the supplies you will need (one pair of size 10 knitting needles and two colors of yarn for your learning project) is a bucket-load of patience!!! :D I look forward to sharing with all of you!

Kat is going to teach us a new stitch! Entrelac
It is realy cool. If you have seen Melinda or Kat working on it you will remember it is little squares set on the diagnal and they are puffy. Melinda did a sweater in entrelac and let us display it at the library and Kat has been working on a blanket. Kat has not given me a pattern. The one listed below is just so you will get the idea. She will bring a pattern for us to the December meeting. She said you would need size 10 knitting needles and 2 colors of woorsted weight yarn. See you all the 2nd Thursday of December.

The Basic Entrelac Scarf
FINISHED SIZE:
10" wide and 69" long.
YARN:
Noro Kochoran (50% wool, 30% angora, 20%
silk; 175 yd [160 m]/100 g): #53 orange/
green/turquoise, 3 skeins. Yarn distributed by
Knitting Fever.
NEEDLES:
Size 9 (5.5 mm). Adjust needle size if necessary
to obtain the correct gauge.
NOTIONS:
Tapestry needle.
GAUGE:
15 sts and 19 rows = 4" in St st. Gauge is not
critical for this project.
SKILL LEVEL:
Intermediate.
If you're new to entrelac and need a basic pattern to get started, you're in luck! I just
started an easy scarf and thought it would make a great beginner entrelac project. I
made up the instructions based on Eunny Jang's Beyond the Basics article on entrelac,
so if you have that article, following the pattern will be a good exercise.
You'll see I haven't finished the scarf, but it's such a quick knit I should be able to
complete it before the weather changes here in the Northeast. Enjoy!

Notes
• This scarf is a great first entrelac project. You can
use any chunky-weight yarn, or even go down to a
worsted weight (for a narrower version).
• In this project, you will pick up stitches on both the
right and wrong sides. You may need to practice picking
up and purling stitches if you’re not used to this
method.
• When picking up stitches, use a half stitch or one full
stitch selvedge. This means pick up your stitches
from the bar in the middle of the first stitch along the
selvedge, or in the trough between the first and second
stitches along the selvedge. Keeping your pickup
locations consistent throughout the pick-up and
throughout the project will ensure a neat look.
BEGINNING SCARF:
Base Triangles:
Use the knitted method (see Glossary)
to CO 24 sts. You want a loose CO for
the beginning of the base triangles.

BODY OF SCARF:
Turn so WS is facing. Rep Tier 1, picking up sts along
blocks instead of base triangles. Then Rep Tier 2. This
scarf alternates tiers of right-slanting blocks with side
triangles and tiers of left-slanting blocks with no side
triangles. As you work, you'll see that the side triangles
on every other tier are necessary to create flush edges
at either side of the scarf. If you did not work side
triangles, your scarf would have zigzag edges. Work
Tiers 1 and 2 until you reach 2" less than desired length
and have several yards of yarn left. Work Tier 1 once
more, to end with a tier with side triangles.
ENDING SCARF:
Top Triangles:
You must have ended with a Tier 1 to work the top
triangles. With RS still facing and 1 st on right needle,
pick up and knit 7 sts down the selvedge of the side
triangle just completed—8 sts on right needle. Turn so
WS is facing.
Row 1: (WS) P8, turn.
Row 2: (RS) Ssk, k5, ssk, turn.
Row 3: (WS) P7, turn.

Weave in ends. Block as desired and as appropriate
for yarn. The scarf shown was not blocked. Blocking
entrelac, especially pinning and ironing it, will flatten
out its three-dimensional surface. Some people like the
smooth, flat look of blocked entrelac; others like the
puffed and quilted look of non-blocked entrelac. Decide
which look you like best before you block your scarf.
With time and wear, your scarf will naturally flatten out
a bit. -

An Idea for a Christmas Gift

Gull Wings Lace Bookmark Knitting Pattern

This knitting pattern for a lace bookmark uses a very old pattern called Gull Wings. It is a very easy lace pattern so if you've never tried knitting lace, this would be a great pattern to try.

Metallic yarn adds sparkle and creates a classy look to this easy knitting project. One skein will make 4 to 5 bookmarks, depending upon the tassel.

Materials

Size 7 US (4.5 mm) needles or size needed to obtain gauge
1 skein Glitterspun by Lion Brand
60% acrylic/27% cupro/13% polyester
50 grams/1.75 ounces
115 yards/105 meters

Gauge

23 sts and 32 rows=4" in pat st (not vital)

Size

2¼" wide x 6¼" long

Instructions:

CO 11 sts

Knit 3 rows in seed st:
*k1, p1; rep from *, end k1
Rep this row.

Row 1 (WS): k1, p across to last st, k1
Row 2: k1, p1, k1, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k1, p1, k1
Row 3: Rep Row 1
Row 4: k1, p1, k2tog, yo, k3, yo, ssk, p1, k1

Rep Rows 1-4 11 times.

Knit 3 rows in seed st.

Weave in ends on WS. Make a tassel if desired and attach to top of bookmark.

Block and stiffen bookmark using a commercial product or liquid laundry starch.

I used a size 5 needle and left over sock yarn. They turned out very nice. I am going to put them in a Christmas card for my son's teachers and a few co workers. It does not take a lot of time and its a nice personal touch I think.

Good News! and Bad News...

Ok the bad first.....Major Specks did not use all of our blankets last year. It seams the ladies who make the dolls had been producing 300 a year and had pushed to make 400. So part of the good news is tho we did not make our goal of 500 there where 100 left from last year! I think 400 is a good goal for us and very doable.
The other part of the good news is that because of your efferot 100 more children had a Christmas treat than the previous years!

!!!!You guys realy rock!!!

Blanket Count Updated

Our current blanket count has been updated to include the blankets donated by Paula (40) and Julie (22). I have finished five in the last week and a half and am going to continue making as many as I can before the November meeting.

If you have have a bunch of completed blankets please bring them to the November meeting or contact me (Kat) at Books A Million in Bossier City on Saturday from 2pm to 4pm. We had a great time and I'm sooo excited about knitting again. I only did the basic knit at class because its been over a year since I've knitted and I felt like I needed to refamiliarize myself w/ the technique. I'm all warmed up now, so I was wondering if there is any way you and I could get together one evening for just a short amount of time so you could show me the pearl stitch. While at work this past Thursday I got a call about our group. With great enthusiasm I asked her to come with me that evening and meet everyone! She very politely asked me if we met on the third Thursday as well because that is what day we where talking about.

I just wanted to tell you all what a great time was had at Author..Author!
There will be more details after the "Wrap" meeting next week but the second anual book festival was a great success.

Our first annual Knit in Public event was a blast as well. Precill was there and sadly we will not see her again until January. She is winging her way north for the Summer. We will miss her! Melinda and Torri where there and by all accounts had a
great time! I was not able to get out of the "green" room and knit with you guys like I wanted but thats just the way things happen sometimes.

Three ladies from the Tuesday Counter Coulture Group where there and there was some knitting going on there. :)

Torri I was able to get that autograph for you. Mrs. Harris was reported saying that it was about time someone brought her a TV Guide Mag. to sign. This was her first.

I don't even remember how I first heard about it but I love the idea. I knit in public all over the place. I keep a project with me in the car and keep something at hand all the time.

I am not the world fasted or best knitter by any stretch but it makes me crazy to have to wait and not have a project to work on.

When we asked for finished work to display in the Library Melinda M. brought the most amazing sweater. I hope you remember because I can not for the life of me remember the stitch pattern name. :) At any rate....The pattern makes up very nicely as an afghan or blanket and I can see a matching pillow in my minds eye. This would be a great way to learn the stitch and we could take it to other projects later. Let me know what you think. I spoke with Melinda Saturday and she would be willing to show us how to do it.

I'm Back ....

We had such a great time on our trip to MN. It was still cool there. I wore a sweater during the day and tromped around the house in the evening in sweats. :)

I brought back a treat to share at our next get together.

My Mother-n-law and I did a bit of yard sale shopping and I lucked upon a stash of
home make mags from 1952 to present. I have them in the back of the car so I won't forget to bring them. There are knitting and crochet patters, gardening and reciept ideas. And its fun to look at the pattern adds and see that the fasions are back in style.

I am so excited, I got a spinning wheel for my birthday. There is the coolest store called RosePath Weaving that Sharon told me about near Tyler,TX. Anyway they had the spnning wheel I wanted and I am hooked!.I am ready to move to a farm raise sheep and spin and spin!! HA!

Maybe we can just make our own knitting and spinning "village" here in Shreveport. Our library group is a start, right?

Hey Peggy, it was good to talk with you and I am so excited about the sock knitting class. As you know I love
to knit socks and would like to encourage others in this passion!

As we discussed, I highly recommend Cat Bordhi's book Socks Soar on Two Circulars. This is my "gold standard" instruction reference and the book that I learned from. Folks will probably have to order the book as I have not seen it here in town; but it is well worth it ----I use it every time I make a pair of socks.

Supplies needed for the first lesson include 2 16-20" circular needles size 2 or 3. Sock yarn of your choice, enough for 2 socks. The self striping/patterning yarn is fun. I am hooked on Addi Turbo (available at Knitting under the Influence here in Shreveport or online) needles for sock knitting but that is just my personal choice. There are less expensive ones out there. I have a friend who recently purchased some "sale" circulars on knitpicks and she is happy with these.

Other supplies that will be needed include stitch markers (the small plastic clothespin kind), and a stitch counter that has a plastic ring on the end that you can pin to your work (not the kind that just has a hole in the middle of it). You will not need these at the first class so I can bring some samples so you will know what I am talking about.

Let's plan for the first three classes to be Thursday March 5th, 12th, 19th at 5:30pm. We can go from there to see if additional classes are needed. I have a feeling it will probably take at least 4 classes to make the first sock, then probably additional guidance as they knit the second one.

I am looking forward to the class; it will be fun!

Go out the front gate to the stop sign. Turn right (south) on Hwy 789. Stay on Hwy 789 for 5.9 miles and you will come to the caution light in Keitchie. Turn left on Hwy 5 and go 12.5 miles to the intersection of Hwy 175/Hwy 5. Turn left and go 2.2 miles to Interstate 49. Be careful and have a safe journey.

Directions from Interstate 49 to Forcht Wade

Exit Interstate 49 at Exit 186 (Kingston / Frierson Exit). Go south on Hwy 175 for 2.2 miles. Turn right on Hwy 5 and go 12.5 miles to the caution light at Keitchie. Turn right on Hwy 789 and go 5.9 miles. Turn left on Caddo Drive and you’re at Forcht Wade.

Knitted Gifts Recieved Well

It is my opinion that we underestimate the value that is placed on our time, effort and creativity. It would appear that I do at any rate.

I made a felted purse and a fun fur vest for my best friend. You would have thought that I had given her the moon! Her boy friend got bulky knit slippers, as back scrubber and some knitted wash cloths, that he intends to use for pot holders, he's a chef. My family got matching wash cloths and big boldly colored towels (I did not knit the towels) and matching bath mitts. They thought it was awesome!

When we give gifts that we create out of love they are most often received in that spirit. And if they are not....For pity sake do not knit for that person again. They have no understanding of the spirit that comes with the gift.

Can't wait to see you all the second Thursday in January!

Some thoughts after December's meeting...

Welcome Laura and Laurane. Sisters who found us because of the article in the "Voices". Gloria was able to help Laurane with a crochet problem and Sharon had Kat spinning before the end of the evening We have started gathering blankets for the next Christmas season. As soon as I remember how I will update that at the top of the blog. We have six little blankets to start the 2009 campaign.

Major Specks invited us to lunch at the Prison to meet the inmates involved in the toy program, see the work shop meet the wardens and possible meet the ladies who made the dolls our blankets covered. We decided on Wednesday January 14th@ 11:00. You will probably want to come a bit earlier but we can talk about that later. I will post directions as soon as I remember to e mail them to myself from work.

January's meeting will be our after the holidays party. I will bring punch if you bring the snacks Pricella said she would bring the plates and flatware. The library has allowed us one of the larger meeting rooms for this purpose.

An easy "man" gift!

Scrubber...
I used a smaller size needle (3.75mms/US5) so the garter stitch bumps would give a nice loofah effect. The scrubber took 110 yards (100 metres) of Sugar 'n Cream cotton, so you can easily make a decent size from one skein…

Finished size:
approx. width: 4-1/2 inches (11cm)
approx. length: 22 to 24 inches (55 to 60cm) (with handles attached)

Cast on 25 sts. with 3.75mm (US5) needles, leaving a longish tail of yarn for sewing later. Garter stitch (knit every row) for 18 to 20 inches (46 to 51 cm) or longer if you want. Bind off, leaving another longish tail for sewing.

Handles (make 2):
Cast on 50 sts. Knit 3 rows and bind off.

Finishing:
Now, fold over approx. one inch of the top of the scrubber and tuck 1 inch (2.5cm) of the handle inside. Sew several stitches through both the scrubber and the handle, making sure they are securely fastened together, then continue sewing along the edge where the folded piece of scrubber material meets the main part towards the opposite side and secure the handle on that side….

Sew the second handle to the other end of the scrubber in the same way and you are done...

Finished scrubber will stretch easily when in use…

The project I was working on Thursday was a Festival Purse for a Christmas present. I found a varigated wool that had the pretty bright colors I liked and it was on sale at Michaels but it also had an extra ingredient. It was 30% soy. I finished it this
morning before work. It turned out great. This was my first try at felting. It was
starteling how much it shrunk in such a short a mount of time. I have it line drying
scard to put it in the dryer lest it disapear :)

Just wanted you to know incase you needed to felt some too.

Cookies from a cake mix!

How cool is that?!

Thursday night one of our group shared that she has been working on a funraiser bake sale and came across a fun short cut to making cookies. The best part is 50 different folks could use this reciep and come up with 50 different cookies....See what I mean:

1 cake mix (she likes Duncan Hines or Berry Crocker)
2 eggs (she likes Jumbo)
1/2 cup canola oil
1TBS water
1tsb each vanilla and almond extract

You may add any goodies you like.

nuts
etc...

With the holidays fast aproaching I thought we could all use the tip.

Major Specks was so pleased with the blankets! They where all georgous! (Sorry if I offend but I am going to use the exclimation mark a log in this post :) The colors and patterns where out of this world! The kids are going to love them. We met Major Specks son, Christian, who inspired the whole project by wanting somthing to cover his bear up with, and where visited by Ginger. Ginger Ramsey of Southern Hills Voices, is doing an article on our group and the blanket project. Lynn Larid came and photographed the whole event. We will have picture for the blog in a day or two.

Major Specks has invited us and the ladies who made the dolls to the prison for lunch and to tour the hobby shop where the inmates make the baby doll beds. We are working on a date and will post it on the blog and email it to the group as soon as we have one set. Its looking like the first week in December but I will get back to you to firm that up.

What say we continue making the blankets? 12 x12 inches is perfect to practice a new pattern or determine if a new type of yarn will be suitable for a project. One ammendment this year. As you complete the blankets turn them in. This is the only way to ensure an acurate count. We can post numbers all day long but it wont matter if we all still have blankets stashed at the house :) Why swatch when you can put it to good use?! We will continure to track our count on the blog so that everyone will be able to see where we are.

We recieved 104 more blankets last night before we turned them over to Major Specks. He was so greatful for all of our help that he has invited us out to the prison for a tour of the Hobby Shop where the baby doll beds are made and lunch. Peggy, I would like to thank all your members that have joined in to make the "tits". I have just found a place that will take them and distribute them. Nancy at the knit shop has been so helpful in putting out the pattern for this and accepting the finished projects. The American Cancer Society's Reach to Recovery program is delighted with this. They do ask us now to over fill the "tits" so the ladies can have more room to make them the perfect fit. Also it would be helpful if they were labeled with what size was knitted. I think we have a lot of "B", not real sure. I know that it is so close to Christmas and like everyone else I am on a deadline to finish my Christmas gifts, but come January this is going to be a great gift to breast cancer survivors. Again, many thanks to the wonderful people in your group who are knitting these.

Ok Ladies,

Its time to get the last of the baby doll blankets in. This Thursday is our November meeting. Major Specks from Forcht Wade Correctional Center will be on hand to recieve the blaknets. Lynn Laird will be their to photograph it all. Our count will be well in excess of 400. I got an e mail this week from a local church knitting group that is shipping their work to my home and a lady at work has thirty and will be there Thursday evening.

As I mentioned, with the last e mail, we have secured one of the Libarary's meething rooms for our January get together. So lets have a party. Bring a snack and I will make punch. What a lovely way to put an end to another great holiday season!

Our knitting group met up again at Nancy's store this first Thursday of October. We had a very short but wonderful meeting. 123 more toy baby blankets have been added to the growing count. We're now up to 321! We now only need 79 more for our December 1st deadline!

There are so many GORGEOUS blankets! Before we turn them over to the Toys For Tots coordinators in December, I will be getting photos of them. One of our knitters actually brought in at least one beautiful little quilted blanket.

A bunch of the ladies left their names with us but we're going to protect their privacy and just say that a LOT of folks have been donating their time and materials toward this awesome project!
